Communication Skills

Learning

The teaching of communication skills is an important part of the learning program at Suneden. We aim to equip our students with the skills needed to communicate their needs and wants, make choices, ask questions, make comments, or just have a chat.

We also understand the relationship between communication and behaviour and that students may use behaviour to tell us what they need when they do not yet have the communication skills to do so. Our staff are highly skilled in tuning in to students and honouring their communication in whatever form this takes, while at the same time building student capacity to communicate effectively.

Staff use a range of tools to model and support communication, including visuals, Auslan sign to support spoken English, and communication apps such as Proloquo2Go.

We are also fortunate to have an Eye gaze system at the school, allowing students with physical difficulties to use movements of their eyes to operate a laptop, iPad or speech-generating device.

Students are encouraged to bring their personal communication systems to school each day.
